Professor Jan De Maeseneer, Head of Department Family Medicine and Primary Health Care at Ghent University, was unanimously elected the Chair of the Expert Panel for the next 18 months on 24 January 2017.
Jan De Maeseneer (1952, Gent) graduated as a Medical Doctor at Ghent University (Belgium) in 1977. Since 1978 he has been working part-time as a family physician in the community health centre Botermarkt in Ledeberg, a deprived area in the city of Ghent. From 1978 to 1981 he worked as a part-time research assistant in health promotion at the Department of Public Health (Prof. Dr. K. Vuylsteek). He has chaired the Department of Family Medicine since 1991. He has also served as the vice-dean for strategic planning at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Since October 2010 he has been the Director of the International Centre for Primary Health Care and Family Medicine – Ghent University that has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre on PHC. He has also been a member of the Global Forum on Innovation of Health Professionals’ Education at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (Washington) since 2012.
Prof. De Maeseneer's Chairmanship will last until June 2018 and his election marks the beginning of the new term of office of the Expert Panel, which will last until September 2019.
