Blood, tissues and organs

Medical therapies based on human blood, tissues, cells and organs are increasingly common, and save many lives. However, care must be taken to eliminate any risk of patients being infected with diseases such as hepatitis and HIV through such therapies.

To ensure the quality and safety of blood, tissues and cells, all EU countries are obliged to comply with the standards laid down in EU legislation.

The Commission is currently carrying out the first formal evaluation of the EU blood and tissues and cells legislation.
