The present Standard describes the requirements that businesses have to comply with in order to produce, standardise, process, package food and place them on the market as Local Products. Local products are those that produced in a specific place, area or region. These products are involved in local development processes, as they contribute to creating the identity of a region, creating links between residents, products, landscape and culture of a region, while preserving the local “gastronomic” heritage. In addition, the delivery of local products through the short supply chain contributes to the sustainability of local economic development, with benefits for the natural environment, society and tradition.
9. Brief Statement of Grounds
This standard describes the requirements for the production, standardisation, processing, packaging and/or placing on the market of local products in order to ensure their origin, short supply chain delivery and traceability.
The present Standard applies to foods of all categories, either processed or unprocessed, with the exception of registered products of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Guaranteed Traditional Specific Products (EPI), wines and products on where the designation of origin or the indication of a geographical name is not permitted in accordance with the applicable relevant National and EU legislation.
The relevant technical specification has been drawn up following international standardisation rules, involving such a representative manner that all the manufacturers/processing/consumption operators involved, state services, organisations and corporate bodies, as well as their public consultation at national level. Its development was based on a single, uniform and above all credible and transparent process, which ensures the consent of all stakeholders at national level, as well as the objectivity of the specifications in terms of conflict of interest.
It should also be pointed out that care was taken so that the technical specifications are compatible with EU law and the principles of the internal market, and that no barriers to trade are created.
