5. Title
Uredba ministra za zdravstveno oskrbo o označevanju logotipa izbire živil Nutri-Score in pogojev njegove uporabe (Uredba o označevanju logotipa izbire živil)

6. Products Concerned

7. Notification Under Another Act
- Uredba (ES) št. 1924/2006 o prehranskih in zdravstvenih trditvah na živilih.
- Direktiva 2000/13/ES o označevanju, predstavljanju in oglaševanju živil

8. Main Content

9. Brief Statement of Grounds

Avianza's considerations regarding Nutriscore front-of-pack labeling

Within the framework of the interest of governments to watch over the health and quality of their citizens, different administrations have introduced in their territories different types of nutritional labeling. One of them, specifically the French "Nutriscore" system, has been the one in which the Spanish authorities have been interested as an option to introduce it in our country.

After a careful evaluation of this system, from Avianza, Spanish Interprofessional Association of Poultry Meat, we found that this model is not fully adapted to the needs of consumers because of its ambiguity and its ineffectiveness in differentiating between healthy and unhealthy products, being based solely on the calories contained in the food.

Meat and meat products offer consumers important nutrients, since they are a source of essential amino acids, as well as vitamins and minerals, essential for the correct development and functioning of the organism at all stages of life.

Therefore, we consider that "Nutriscore" labeling is detrimental to both consumers and producers, and therefore to the European market, by providing data based solely on the caloric value of foods, thus offering biased and distorted information, far from the Mediterranean diet, healthy and varied, based on natural, healthy and sustainable products, which benefit the health and quality of life of consumers.

Nutriscore focuses on giving foods one of five letter ratings, with "A" being a preferable score and "E" a detrimental score. Only seven different parameters of nutritional information per 100 g of food are involved in the calculation of the score. This calculation does not take into account the exact quantities consumed, which ends up confusing the consumer even more.

For all these reasons, we consider that the introduction of the Nutriscore font type labeling in our country is not an appropriate choice to preserve consumer protection, as well as the transparency of food economic operators and food safety.

From Avianza, we consider that a front labeling should take into account the scientifically recognized nutritional properties, as well as the individual macronutrients provided by foods, and include specific nutritional information, essential to follow a healthy lifestyle and fight against diet-related diseases.
