07. Description of the measure The project promotes the meeting between the craft business world and the young unemployed through 6 months’ work experience in the artisan workshop which becomes a teaching workshop, intended to increase job opportunities and stimulate new entrepreneurial initiatives. The initiative is aimed at young unemployed people aged between 18 and 35, selected on the basis of personal characteristics, professional experience acquired and motivation. During the six-month training period the young people are hosted in teaching workshops and, under the guidance of an expert artisan, work for the company as employees, gradually acquiring working techniques and developing their professional skills according to a training project specifically developed for each case. The in-company apprenticeship is preceded and supported by guidance, information and support activities aimed at young people (110 hours) and artisans (40 hours). Pupils receive grants of €450.00 a month and companies are reimbursed expenses of €363.00 a month. The costs are borne by the Piedmont Region.

12. Why is this measure a success? Please give information on results and achievements. • The first editions of the project had considerable success from the point of view of job opportunities. Currently, also because of the widespread economic crisis, at the end of the apprenticeship it is more difficult for the company to formally hire the apprentice. • The apprentice can assess with maturity and awareness, if craftsmanship pf excellence is actually their professional and life goal, and consequently plan their future. • Young people from the Teaching Workshop represent a significant pool of motivated and competent people for certain production operations, who can be absorbed by the industry and thereby contribute to developing excellent manufacturing in Piedmont. • Some former apprentices have resumed their studies (secondary school or university), others are enrolled on specialisation courses in the field of vocational training, others have started collaborations and different experiences but still aimed at becoming a handicraft professional. • The apprentices have the chance to discover a new model of traditional handicrafts, a model that sees the company, its size, skills, technologies, products and marketing systems change.
13. Problems that had to be overcome and lessons learned The Piedmont Region was the first Italian region to invest in this project: other similar initiatives to this project have been initiated at local and ministerial level. The responses have been positive, especially form the artisans involved that have now demonstrated a significant desire to actively participate in the project, taking part in the activities proposed by developing an ongoing and constructive relationship with the apprentices and the tutors, becoming promoters of proposals, applications, needs, improvements and also constructive criticism. These artisans have shown a passion and a vocation to pass on their work and help the young people grow who have surprised the project coordinators.
