    La nefrología es una rama de la medicina que se ocupa del estudio y función renal tanto en la salud como en la enfermedad incluyendo la prevención, diagnostico y tratamiento de las enfermedades que afectan al riñón y al tracto urinario, tanto primarias como secundarias, a todas las edades, estudios de los procesos generales que pueden originarse en el mal funcionamiento renal (hipertensión arterial, daño vascular, trastornos hidroelectrolíticos y equilibrio acido - base) y conocimiento, aplicación práctica y desarrollo de una serie de técnicas de exploración, diagnostico y tratamiento. Precisa de una intima colaboración con otras especialidades médicas y quirúrgicas afines y complementarias (Urología, Laboratorio, Anatomía Patológica, Diagnostico por imagen, Cuidados Intensivos)

    Su campo de acción es tanto hospitalaria como extrahospitalaria.

    Nephrology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study and functions of the kidneys, in both health and disease including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the kidneys and urinary tract, both primary and secondary, to all ages; studies of general processes that may result in kidney malfunction (hypertension, vascular damage, electrolyte disorders and acid-base balance) and knowledge about the same, as well as practical application and development of a number of diagnosis and treatment techniques. Close collaboration with other medical and surgical specialties, related and complementary (Urology, laboratory, Pathology, imaging, intensive care) ones, is required. Its field of action extends to both inpatient and outpatient care.
