Rhineland-Palatinate supports companies undertaking research and development projects which can be assigned to industrial research and/or experimental development and which aim at new, substantially revised or significantly improved products or production processes. Also refundable are feasibility studies on research and development (R&D) projects. Entitled to apply are, in particular, small and medium-sized commercial enterprises (SMEs) as described by the SME definition of European Union (EU). Larger companies are allowed to apply if the project is of great importance for the state. The measure aims primarily at promoting individual companies.
The non-repayable grant is limited to € 37,500 for feasibility studies and €500,000 for R&D projects. For R&D projects in industrial research, the initial subsidy rate may be up to 50% and for experimental development up to 25%.
As for most German support measures at the regional level, this particular measure was not evaluated. Reliable information on its actual effects is therefore available to a very limited extent. Additionally, there is very little information available on the effects of similar measures in other regional contexts. Consequently, it is not possible to give other than an anecdotal assessment of the outcomes.
Based on the limited availability of information described above, no reliable recommendations can be given.
