The Alentejo 2020 Regional Operational Programme (ROP) is the main funding instrument available to the region for the implementation of its development strategy in the period 2014-2020.

ROP Alentejo will receive €1082.9m from EU funds: €898.2m (ERDF) and €184.7m (European Social Fund). 10 strategic priorities have been established within the programme (in brackets the amount of EU funding):

  • Competitiveness and internationalisation of SMEs (€363.5m).
  • Education and training of human capital (€131.3m).
  • RTD and innovation (€67.9m).
  • Sustainable urban development (€126.9m).
  • Employment and economic enhancement of endogenous resources (€81.9m).
  • Social cohesion and inclusion (€109.4m).
  • Energy efficiency and mobility (€102.9m).
  • Environment and sustainability (€57.1m).
  • Institutional capacity building and administrative modernisation (€11.3m).

In particular, the strategic priorities on “competitiveness and internationalisation of SMEs”, “RTD and innovation” and “institutional capacity building and administrative modernisation” are those that are expected to contribute more crucially to boost the competitiveness of the regional economy, regarding particularly high-tech entrepreneurship, innovation, internationalisation, knowledge transfer and enhancement of the regional research and innovation system.
