The regional council of Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the managing authority for policies and financial support for innovation in the region. Within the region, innovation is addressed by the economic development and environmental pole, composed of various departments which are the directorate for industrial performance, the directorate for higher education and technology transfer, the digitalisation mission and the start-up mission. Within this pole, the region has created seven services dedicated to seven smart specialisation sectors namely: aerospace, photonic and chemistry, health and silver economy, forestry, wood and paper, energy transition, blue growth, leather, luxury, textile and crafts and green economy.


The region addresses innovation through the three pillars of its economic strategy:
- By supporting companies at all stage of their development;
- By enabling an innovative industrial policy addressing both environmental and social challenges;
- By promoting innovation under all its shapes, and notably by creating an enabling environment for innovative start-up development.
