To become a centre of excellence dedicated to research and permanent monitoring of the ocean. This initiative brings together a multidisciplinary scientific community, joining several institutions with the aim of promoting cooperation and resource optimization.


The observatory is co-financed by the Madeira Regional Operational Programme (Madeira 14-20), under the Portugal 2020 strategy, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The activities include:

  • Develop research in Biodiversity;
  • Fisheries and Aquaculture;
  • Remote marine Animal Detection and Remote Sensing;
  • Meteo-Oceanographic modelling: and
  • Forecasting systems.

The project has also some ‘core’ activities which includes leadership and management as well as Educational and Outreach activities. Data management and services are also part of the core activities.
