The notification system was set up to inform stakeholders about policy actions related to European standards. It helps ensure proper consultation and market relevance before the action is taken. The obligation to publish information on a website stems from Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012.
The Commission has been working with standardisers, industry and EU countries to maximise the availability of masks, gloves, gowns and other medical supplies. On 20 March 2020, CEN and CENELEC, in collaboration with all their members, agreed to immediately make available a number of European standards for medical devices and personal protective equipment. This helps companies willing to manufacture these items to swiftly start production and place products on the internal market more easily, while ensuring a high degree of safety.
In June 2020, the Commission published an addendum to the 2020 Rolling plan on ICT standardisation which identifies various types of standardisation actions which may be taken to protect EU citizens, including contact tracing applications and their interoperability, security and privacy. It highlights domains where ICT standards can be useful for preparing for possible future pandemics and supporting the societal and economic recovery of Europe.
