New stakeholder consultation report on satellite navigation upstream R&D for Horizon Europe
Published on: 03/12/2019
The European Commission has released a stakeholder consultation report on potential satellite navigation upstream research and development (R&D) to be funded under the Horizon Europe programme. The report follows a workshop held on 13 September 2019 at the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA) in Prague, Czech Republic.

The workshop included members of the R&D community from industry, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), research institutes, and universities. The two main topics that were discussed were mission and services, and technology and infrastructure.

Building on input from an open call for ideas in July 2019, the report provides an overview of the satellite navigation upstream R&D activities that could be funded under Horizon Europe. The results of this work will feed into the multi-annual strategic agenda and work programme for European global navigation satellite system (EGNSS) upstream R&D in 2021-2027.

Satellite navigation in Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is the EU’s next research and innovation framework programme. It covers the period 2021-2027. Satellite navigation R&D to support the further development of the EU’s Galileo and EGNOS programmes will be carried out under pillar 2 of this programme, and specifically within cluster 4, which is dedicated to digital industry and space.

This includes R&D on the development of downstream applications, as well as upstream work to support the implementation and modernisation of EU space programmes. The aim is to ensure the evolution of EGNSS services meets user needs through the development of new technological concepts.
