The public discourse on youth and media is continuously marked by concerns. The concerns are often related to media violence and its effects on children and youth, how often and to what ends youth use media and what effects does the media consumption have on their psychological development, learning abilities, health issues, active citizenship, self-perception and interpersonal relationship, the development of unwanted behaviours (such as cheating at school tests, stealing, fighting, bullying, conflicts with parents, online harassment, gambling, skipping classes, destroying property, alcohol drinking, smoking) and so on. Discussions on these issues are frequently accompanied by pessimistic forecasts.

The purpose of this workshop is to discuss and critically reflect on the influence of digital media consumption habits and culture on behaviours, frameworks of thinking, norms and values of contemporary youth. We will explore and discuss how media literacy competences:

  • contribute to development of analytical and evidence-based way of thinking;
  • foster critical approach in following media contents;
  • foster creativity and self-expression
  • strengthen social inclusion
  • tackle negative phenomena, related to media communication, like disinformation, fake news and hate speech
  • support active citizenship and stimulate active engagement of youth in public life of their communities.

The interactive workshop will be organized at School of Advanced Social Studies in Nova Gorica in cooperation with the Infrastructure program of the Faculty of Media - Collecting, Managing and Archiving Data on Media Literacy (funded by the Slovenian Research Agency).
