Better Training for Safer Food

Better Training for Safer Food (BTSF) is a Commission initiative aimed at organising a Union training strategy in the areas of food and feed law, animal health and welfare, as well as plant health rules. It is based on Article 130 of the Official Controls Regulation (EU) 2017/625 . The bulk of BTSF programmes is designed for staff of competent authorities of Member States involved in official control activities so as to keep them up-to-date with all aspects of Union law in the areas specified above and to ensure that sanitary and phytosanitary controls are carried out in a more uniform, objective and efficient manner throughout the EU. However, as it is also essential that non-EU countries and, particularly developing countries, are familiar with EU food standards and import requirements, specific training activities are organised for the official control staff of these countries under the BTSF initiative.

The Commission sets the policy and general strategy for Better Training for Safer Food and provides the subject matter expertise for all training activities. The initiative is put into practice by the Consumers, Health Agriculture and Food Executive Agency which manages all the administrative and financial phases of the training projects, from launch of calls for tender to evaluations of offers, award of contracts, and supervision of implementation.
