A set of new rules, proposed by the Commission, to modernise and harmonise the production and marketing chain for fruit propagating material and fruit plants, applies as of 1 January 2017.

Member States experts endorsed additional measures against Xylella fastidiosa, one of the most dangerous plant bacteria known worldwide.

Member State endorsed emergency measures proposed by the Commission, with stricter requirements for the importation citrus fruit from Brazil, South Africa and Uruguay. The measures are intended to increase the protection against fruits contaminated with citrus black spot, a harmful plant disease not native to Europe

The EU has committed close to €11.5 million to support the survey programmes for plant pests in 22 Member States in 2016. Large part of the budget will be dedicated to the survey of Xylella fastidiosa and of Pinewood Nematode.

FOREMATIS currently lists almost 94.000 entries of planted forest tree species compiled on the basis of Member States' national lists. It provides information on their origin, type and location.

The Opinion is open for comments until 10 January 2016.

Since May 2015, EU has taken measures to eradicate Xylella fastidiosa, with the aim of preventing the further spread of the bacterium within the EU.

The Commission has adopted 10 new authorisations for GMOs for food/feed use, 7 renewals of existing authorisations and authorised the importation of 2 GMO cut flowers (not for food or feed).

The Commission proposes to amend the GMO legislation giving Member States more freedom to restrict, or prohibit the use of EU-authorised GMOs in food or feed on their territory.
