Euronews OCEAN episode 7: Women in fisheries

Women play a key role in fishing and aquaculture — but too often their work remains unrecognised and underpaid. Limited career choices, unfair pay gaps — many women have a hard time making their way in this male-dominated sector.

In this episode, Euronews travels to Spain, in Galicia and Vigo, to meet women who make a living by working in different fields of the fishing sector. From shellfish gatherers, net menders or women who work in the seafood processing sector, they all challenge the stereotypes and build successful professions or businesses. The EU is helping women capitalise on their knowledge and determination through targeted funding and local partnerships. The Galician Foundation for Fishing and Shell fishing (FUNDAMAR) runs several EU-supported projects to promote gender equality, while FARNET, a community-led local development network, offers support under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF).
