Arturo Larena is an environmental journalist and scientist. Currently, he is in charge of EFEVerde (Global Platform for Environmental Journalism) and the department of Science and Future of the EFE Agency. He has been a member of the board of trustees of the Fundación EFE (EFE Foundation), during which time he managed the Agency’s programmes that specialised in environmental journalism. Amongst these programmes, special mention should be made of the Tetra Pak-EFEVerde grants awarded to young environmental journalists (15 editions), the SIGRE journalism and sustainability grants, and the SIGNUS grants for environmental and recycling journalism.
Arturo has been a pioneer in the use of social networks for spreading messages about the environment. After developing the not-for-profit project http://www.efeverde.com, as a tool for sharing environmental information on the internet, since 2009 he has promoted the presence of EFE on social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest) e.g. http://twitter.com/efeverde.
A lecturer at the Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano (Spanish-American New Journalism Foundation, co-founded by the Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez), as well as a member of the Advisory Board of the Red Internacional de Escritores por la Tierra (RIET – International Network of Writers for the Earth), his extensive journalistic output includes more than a thousand news stories, reports and interviews. He has been a speaker on numerous international courses and seminars, seeking always to guide and encourage young journalists.
Amongst other awards, he has won the WWF’s Gold Panda for Environmental Communication and Awareness-raising (2011, special prize), the BBVA Foundation Prize for Raising Knowledge and Awareness about Conservation of Biodiversity (2009) and the National Environmental Prize (2005).
