Tekniska åtgärder är ett omfattande regelverk som bestämmer var, när och hur fiskarna får fiska. De finns för alla fiskeområden i EU, men skiljer sig mycket åt från ett område till ett annat, beroende på de regionala förutsättningarna.

Tekniska åtgärder kan omfatta

  • minsta storlek på den fisk som får tas i land och minimistorlekar för bevarandeåtgärder
  • specifikationer för utformning och användning av redskap
  • minsta maskstorlek för nät
  • krav på selektiva redskap för att minska oönskade bifångster
  • stängda områden och säsonger
  • begränsningar av bifångster (fångst av arter man inte vill ha eller inte avsåg att fiska)
  • åtgärder för att minimera fiskets effekter på det marina ekosystemet och havsmiljön.

Reglerna för de tekniska åtgärderna måste uppdateras som en följd av reformen av fiskeripolitiken. EU-kommissionen har därför lagt fram ett nytt ramförslag om tekniska bevarandeåtgärder.
