I totali ammissibili di catture (TAC), o possibilità di pesca, sono limiti di cattura (espressi in tonnellate o numeri) che vengono fissati per la maggior parte degli stock ittici commerciali. La Commissione prepara le proposte basandosi sui pareri scientifici sullo stato degli stock forniti da organismi di consulenza come il CIEM e il comitato CSTEP. Alcuni piani pluriennali contengono le norme per la fissazione dei TAC, che vengono fissati ogni anno per la maggior parte degli stock (ogni due anni per gli stock di acque profonde) dal Consiglio dei ministri della pesca. Per gli stock condivisi e gestiti congiuntamente con i paesi extra-UE i TAC vengono concordati insieme ai (gruppi di) paesi interessati.
I paesi dell'UE condividono i TAC ripartendoli in contingenti nazionali. Per ogni stock si applica un diverso coefficiente di attribuzione per la suddivisione dei contingenti (il cosiddetto principio della stabilità relativa). I contingenti possono essere scambiati tra paesi membri.
I paesi dell'UE sono tenuti a utilizzare criteri trasparenti e oggettivi nella ripartizione del contingente nazionale tra i pescatori, evitando ogni forma di sfruttamento eccessivo degli stock. Una volta esaurito il contingente disponibile per una determinata specie di pesce, il paese in questione è obbligato a chiudere l’attività di pesca.
Nel bacino del Mediterraneo la maggior parte delle attività di pesca viene gestita esclusivamente mediante controlli sugli input.

Capraia is a small island in the upper Tyrrhenian Sea, in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park between Italy and the island of Corsica. Measuring just 8 km by 4 km and located about 70 km off the coast of Tuscany, the Capraia is home to about 300 people.
