Lubatud kogupüügid või kalapüügivõimalused on püügi piirnormid (väljendatud tonnides või numbriliselt), mis kehtestatakse enamiku töönduslike kalavarude suhtes. Komisjon koostab asjaomased ettepanekud, mis tuginevad kalavarude olukorda käsitlevatele Rahvusvahelise Mereuurimise Nõukogu ning kalanduse teadus-, tehnika- ja majanduskomitee teaduslikele nõuannetele. Mõned mitmeaastased kavad hõlmavad eeskirju lubatud kogupüügi kehtestamiseks. Kalandusministrite nõukogu kehtestab lubatud kogupüügid enamuse kalavarude puhul iga-aastaselt (süvamereliikide puhul igaks kaheks aastaks). Selliste kalavarude puhul, mida jagatakse ja majandatakse ühiselt ELi mittekuuluvate riikidega, on lubatud kogupüük asjaomaste riikidega (või nende rühmadega) kokku lepitud.
Lubatud kogupüügid jagatakse ELi liikmesriikide vahel riiklike kvootide abil. Kvootide jagamisel eraldatakse iga kalavaru puhul ELi liikmesriigi kohta erinev protsent. Sellist fikseeritud protsenti nimetatakse suhteliseks stabiilsuseks. ELi liikmesriigid saavad omavahel kvoote vahetada.
ELi liikmesriigid peavad kasutama läbipaistvaid ja objektiivseid kriteeriume riiklike kvootide jaotamisel oma kalurite vahel. Nad vastutavad selle eest, et püügi puhul kvoote ei ületataks. Kui kõik olemasolevad liigipõhised kvoodid on ammendatud, peab liikmesriik püügi lõpetama.
Vahemere vesistus majandatakse enamust kalavarudest ainult sisendite kontrollimeetmete kaudu.

On 8 January 2021, the EU and Greenland concluded negotiations for a new Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) and a new Protocol that will strengthen their cooperation in the fisheries sector for the next four years with the possibility of a two-year extension.
The 2020 Annual Economic Report on the EU Fishing Fleet projects that in 2020, the EU fleet remained profitable overall, despite the effects of COVID-19 on the fleet and fish markets. More sustainable fishing and lower fuel costs have helped to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic.
The United Kingdom and the European Union have agreed to a Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), applicable on a provisional basis from 1 January 2021.
