Общият допустим улов (ОДУ) или възможностите за риболов представляват ограничения на улова (изразени в тонове или брой), които се определят за повечето запаси със стопанско значение. Комисията представя предложения въз основа на научни становища за състоянието на запасите, изготвяни от консултативни органи като Международния съвет за изследване на морето (ICES) и Научния, технически и икономически комитет по рибарство (НТИКР). Някои многогодишни планове съдържат правила за определяне на ОДУ. ОДУ се определя всяка година за повечето запаси (на всеки две години за дълбоководните запаси) от Съвета на министрите по въпросите на рибарството. За запасите, които се споделят и управляват съвместно със страни извън ЕС, ОДУ се договаря с тези (групи) страни.
ОДУ се разпределя между страните от Съюза под формата на национални квоти. При разпределянето на квотите се определя различен процент за всеки запас и всяка страна съгласно т.нар. принцип на относителна стабилност. Страните от ЕС могат да обменят квоти помежду си.
Страните от Съюза трябва да използват прозрачни и обективни критерии, когато разпределят националните си квоти между своите рибари. Те отговарят за това квотите да не бъдат надхвърляни. Когато цялата налична квота за даден вид е изчерпана, съответната страна трябва да забрани улова му.
В Средиземноморския басейн по-голямата част от риболовните дейности се управляват само чрез контрол на входа.

On 8 January 2021, the EU and Greenland concluded negotiations for a new Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) and a new Protocol that will strengthen their cooperation in the fisheries sector for the next four years with the possibility of a two-year extension.
The 2020 Annual Economic Report on the EU Fishing Fleet projects that in 2020, the EU fleet remained profitable overall, despite the effects of COVID-19 on the fleet and fish markets. More sustainable fishing and lower fuel costs have helped to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic.
