Gandrīz visus svarīgākos zivju krājumus un zivsaimniecību pārvalda, izmantojot daudzgadu plānu. Tajā ir noteikti zivju krājumu pārvaldības mērķi, kas izteikti kā zvejas izraisītā mirstība un/vai vēlamais krājuma lielums. Dažos plānos ir ietverti arī sīki izstrādāti un konkrētajiem apstākļiem piemēroti ceļveži mērķa sasniegšanai. Atsevišķos daudzgadu plānos iekļauj zvejas piepūles ierobežojumus, ko papildina gada kopējā pieļaujamā nozveja (KPN) un īpaši kontroles noteikumi.
Jaunās kopējās zivsaimniecības politikas daudzgadu plānos būs ietverts tāds mērķis kā nozveja maksimālajā ilgtspējīgas ieguves apjomā un termiņš, kurā tas jāsasniedz. Tie ietvers arī izkraušanas pienākuma īstenošanas pasākumus. Turklāt tajos būtu jāiekļauj aizsargpasākumi attiecībā uz koriģējošām darbībām, ja tādi nepieciešami, un, piemēram, pārskatīšanas klauzulas. Daudzgadu plānos var iekļaut arī tehniskus pasākumus.
