Zarządzanie rybołówstwem w UE opiera się na danych, które gromadzą, którymi zarządzają i które przekazują kraje UE w ramach systemu gromadzenia danych.

Wspólna polityka rybołówstwa, która została niedawno zreformowana, w art. 25. ust. 2 określa podstawowe zasady, jakimi należy się kierować przy gromadzeniu danych. Są to:

• dokładność
• wiarygodność i aktualność
• unikanie powielania działań dzięki sprawniejszej koordynacji
• bezpieczne przechowywanie w bazach danych
• większa dostępność danych
• przestrzeganie przepisów o ochronie danych osobowych
• udostępnienie danych Komisji Europejskiej, aby mogła ona sprawdzać dostępność i jakość danych oraz metod zastosowanych do ich gromadzenia.

Te zasady są głównym tematem wniosku Komisji w sprawie wprowadzenia zmian do rozporządzenia dotyczącego systemu gromadzenia danych, który jest obecnie opracowywany.
