The European Commission's Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries manages two policy areas:
It is led by João Aguiar Machado (Director-General) under the political responsibility of Commissioner Karmenu Vella.
With a staff of around 400, it is one of the smallest departments in the Commission.

Contracts and funding
A new report published today highlights what the five EU funds have achieved since the beginning of the funding period, as the implementation of the 2014-2020 programmes has now reached full speed.
Earlier this morning, EU ministers reached an agreement on fishing opportunities for 2018 in the Atlantic, North Sea and Black Sea following negotiations at the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 11 - 12 December.
