To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries around the world have taken a variety of restrictive measures. While the numbers of the first quarter 2020 already showed their significant impact on air transport, the impact in the second quarter is even starker.

Compared with the second quarter of 2019, the number of passengers carried decreased by more than 91% in all 20 EU Member States with available data in the second quarter 2020: Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.

The largest decreases in numbers of passengers were observed in Spain (-61.6 million passengers carried, -99%), Germany (-59.1 million, -97%), France (-44.2 million, -97%), Italy (-42.6 million, -98%), the Netherlands (-20.9 million, -96%), Portugal (-15.0 million, -97%), Ireland (-10.3 million, -98%), Austria (-9.2 million, -98%) and Denmark (-9.1 million, -97%).

Methodological note:

  • Passengers carried: Refers to all passengers on a particular flight (with one flight number) counted once only and not repeatedly on each individual stage of that flight. It includes all revenue and non-revenue passengers whose journey begins or terminates at the reporting airport and transfer passengers joining or leaving the flight at the reporting airport as well as transfer passengers. Direct transit passengers are excluded.
