	This article presents the material footprints of European countries and the [[Glossary:European_Union_(EU)\|European Union]] (EU). Material footprints quantify the worldwide demand for material extractions ([[Glossary:Biomass\|biomass]], [[Glossary:Metal ores\|metal ores]], [[Glossary:Non-metallic minerals\|non-metallic minerals]] and [[Glossary:Fossil energy materials\|fossil energy materials/carriers]]) triggered by consumption and investment by households, governments and businesses in European countries and the EU, respectively.		This article presents the material footprints of European countries and the [[Glossary:European_Union_(EU)\|European Union]] (EU). Material footprints quantify the worldwide demand for material extractions ([[Glossary:Biomass\|biomass]], [[Glossary:Metal ores\|metal ores]], [[Glossary:Non-metallic minerals\|non-metallic minerals]] and [[Glossary:Fossil energy materials\|fossil energy materials/carriers]]) triggered by consumption and investment by households, governments and businesses in European countries and the EU, respectively. This indicator helps show how much pressure EU consumption puts on natural resources around the world. It gives a broader picture than looking only at the materials extracted inside the EU.

	Material footprints are estimated, using data from national accounts and [https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/environment/methodology#Material%20flows%20and%20resource%20productivity material flow accounts]. The latter are presented in more detail in the article '[[material flow accounts and resource productivity]]'. Other articles related to material flows discuss [[resource productivity statistics]] and [[physical imports and exports]]. 	Figure 1 also shows the EU's material footprint in a breakdown by 4 main material categories. Non-metallic minerals is the largest ~~material~~ category, the development of which ~~is highly determined by~~ the ~~activity level~~ of the EU's ~~construction industries~~.		Figure 1 also shows the EU's material footprint in a breakdown by the four main material categories (biomass, metal ores, non-metallic minerals, fossil energy materials) used in material flow accounts. Non-metallic minerals make up the largest share in the total footprint. This category includes materials such as sand, gravel and stone, which are widely used in construction. Because of this, changes in non-metallic minerals are closely linked to activity in the EU construction sector.

			For comparison, Figure 1 includes the development of another important material flow indicator as a dotted line: [[Glossary:Domestic_extraction_(DE)\|domestic extraction (DE)]], which takes into account those materials extracted from the EU territory. The proportion of domestic extraction within the material footprint reflects the EU's natural resource base. In 2025, domestic extraction accounted for 83% of the EU material footprint. 			For the EU, material footprint and domestic extraction followed a similar path over time. At the same time, the gap between the two indicators became smaller. In 2025, it was 2.5 tonnes per capita. The largest gap appeared in 2008, when it reached 4.2 tonnes per capita. This long-term decline suggests that the EU relies less on imports measured in raw material equivalents than it did in the past.
