Eurostat publishes some interesting facts & figures on deaths from cardiovascular diseases in the European Union.

... that in the EU diseases of the circulatory system were the main cause of death (causing 37% of all deaths)?

... that more than one third of all deaths in Lithuania (37%) were due to heart attacks*?

… that major discrepancies existed between Member States regarding the share of deaths due to heart attacks* with France and Portugal (both 6%) having the lowest percentages;

… that in all EU countries there was a higher share of women (10% in the EU) than men (7%) who died from a stroke**?

.… that Bulgaria (20%) and Romania (19%) were the two EU Member States which observed the highest share of deaths due to a stroke**?

* heart attacks refer to ischaemic heart diseases (ICD code I20-25).

** strokes refer to cerebrovascular diseases (ICD code I60-69).
