The price of communications (postal services, telephone and telefax equipment, telephone and telefax services) for consumers in the European Union (EU) fell by 10 % in the period March 2009 – March 2019. This fall contrasts with an increase of 16 % over the same period for total consumer prices, as measured by the monthly Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP).

More detailed figures on the different components of communication costs are available from December 2016. They show that the falling price for communication is being driven primarily by reductions in the price of telephone and telefax equipment. Between December 2016 and March 2019 the price of communications as a whole decreased by 2 %. During this period, telephone and telefax equipment prices fell by 19 %, while the prices of postal services increased by 8 %. For telephone and telefax services, prices were 1 % lower.
