EU road freight transport up by 0.9% in 2025

In 2025, the total volume of road freight transport in the EU reached 1 886 billion tonne-kilometres, up by 0.9% compared with the previous year. The total weight of transported goods amounted to 13.3 billion tonnes, up by 1.8% compared with 2024.

Poland recorded the highest volume of road freight transport, with 381.0 billion tonne-kilometres, or 20.2% of the EU total. Germany came second with 277.4 billion (14.7%), ahead of Spain (272.6 billion; 14.5%), France (172.9 billion; 9.2%) and Italy (161.7 billion; 8.6%). Together, these 5 countries accounted for 67.1% of the total EU road freight tonne-kilometres.

The overall distribution of EU road freight transport activity, measured in tonne-kilometres, remained broadly stable in 2025. Most freight was transported nationally (62.2%), while international transport accounted for 24.4%, cross trade for 10.7% and cabotage for the remaining 2.7%. National transport increased by 2.2% compared with 2024, international transport rose slightly (+0.3%), while cross-trade and cabotage declined by 3.7% and 3.0%, respectively.

When looking at country-to-country road freight transport flows within the EU, the largest volume of goods was transported between Germany and the Netherlands, 86.9 million tonnes. The flow between Germany and Poland came next with 68.4 million tonnes, ahead of Belgium and France with 55.9 million tonnes. 

Germany was either the origin or destination in 6 out of the top 10 EU flows, illustrating its key role in intra-EU road freight transport.
