Mexico was the EU's 11th largest partner for exports (2% of total extra-EU imports) and the 15th largest for EU imports (1% of total extra-EU exports) in 2018.
Between 2008 and 2018, the EU ran a trade surplus (meaning that it exported more than it imported) with Mexico. This trade surplus was highest in 2015 at €14 billion and lowest in 2009 at €6 billion. In 2018, the trade surplus was €13 billion.
EU exports to Mexico were dominated by "machinery and vehicles", "chemicals" and "other manufactured products", which together accounted for 92% of EU exports to Mexico. The same categories accounted for 72% of EU imports from Mexico. At a more detailed level, "motor vehicle parts" were the EU’s most exported product to Mexico, while "cars and motor vehicles" were the main product imported into the EU from Mexico.

Among the Member States, Germany was the largest importer of goods from Mexico (€7 billion) and exporter of goods to Mexico (€14 billion) in 2018.
