Vladimír Šucha is the Director-General of the Joint Research Centre, the in-house scientific service of the European Commission, since 1 January 2014. Previously, he was the JRC Deputy Director-General and before that he spent six years as Director for culture and media in the Directorate-General for Education and Culture. Before joining the European Commission, he was Director of the Slovak Research and Development Agency, the national body responsible for funding research. From 2004-2005 he was principal advisor for European affairs to the Slovak Minister of Education. He worked at the Permanent Representation of Slovakia to the EU as research, education and culture counsellor, from 2000-2004. In parallel, Mr Šucha has followed a long-term academic and research career, being a full professor in Slovakia and visiting professor/scientist at a variety of academic institutions in other countries and he published about 100 scientific publications.
