Short description of the Master programme

The Master in Statistics and Information Management – specialization in Statistical Systems - was developed in a close collaboration between the NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS) – Universidade Nova de Lisboa - and the Portuguese Central Bank (Banco de Portugal), counting also with the support of the European Central Bank (ECB) and of the Irving Fisher Committee on Central Banks Statistics (Bank for International Settlements).

Its aims to provide the experts and managers who work with central banks' statistics and National Statistical Systems (either as producers, analysts or users of statistical information) with the fundamental knowledge and skills to the development of their activity. The program places a special emphasis on the collection and compilation of statistics produced by National Statistical Institutes or any other statistical authorities.

The program is targeted at staff of central banks, including producers, analysts or users of statistical information. It is also addressed to all those who work in National Statistical Institutes (NSI), in statistical departments of banks and other financial institutions, or in any other statistical authorities.

The main goal of this program is the training of managers and experts to:

  • Develop techniques and methodologies of data collection;
  • Master the tools and processes used for the storage, organization and access to information in an entity responsible for the production of central banks' statistics;
  • Apply the statistical and computational methodologies and tools of exploration and analysis of information, to produce official statistics that can add value to decision making;
  • Organize and communicate results, in a written form and orally, adapting them to the level and specific interests of the audience.

Entrance criteria (note of Bachelor degree, language, other)

The selection process is based on the analysis of the applicant's academic and professional curriculum, and an interview.

Good written and spoken English is mandatory.
