Relevant documents produced outside the ESS may be registered in the catalogue of ESS standards. ESS standards need to be established by consensus and recognised by the ESS as providing useful solutions for common and repeated use in support of the implementation of the mission and vision of the ESS .
When an ESS standard is not owned by the ESS , a working group acts as ESS maintainer of the standard and is responsible for driving the inclusion of the standard in the catalogue from a business perspective.
For instance SDMX and GSBPM are not directly produced by the ESS , but are ESS standards because de facto widely in use in the ESS , considered as having the characteristics of standards, and formally approved by the ESSC as ESS standards.
