Target Group

Statistical units responsible for field work in the NSIs and field survey methodologists of NSIs

Entry Qualifications

  • Sound command of English. Participants should be able to make short interventions and to actively participate in discussions

Objective(s)

  • The main objective of this course is to provide participants of theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of all aspects of data collection by fields interviews from preparatory steps for the fieldwork to the processes after the data retrieval in order to maximise the quality of data in compliance with the European requirements, guidelines and best practices.

Contents

  • Introduction to field interview methodology
    theory, legal basis, ESS and national specificities, ESS cooperation, relations with data providers
  • Survey design: Questionnaire design, sample survey design and data collection strategies
    including management of work processes, methodology and credibility controls
  • Case studies (with input from participants)
    Exchange of country experiences, best practices, questions and searching for practical solutions
  • Training: e-learning and other training methods for interviewers
  • Quality data transmission
    ESS requirements for transmission, data description & metadata
  • Data cleaning
  • Imputation strategies for analysing incomplete data and weighting
  • Quality: quality data aspects in field interviews, best practices for retrieving high quality data, quality reporting

Expected Outcome

The course will provide a better understanding of all aspects of data collection by fields interviews from preparatory steps for the fieldwork to the processes after the data retrieval in order to maximise the quality of data in compliance with the European requirements, recommendations and best practices.
All participants will receive a course certificate, based on attendance to the course.
