In general, data validation is the process of ensuring that data are clean, correct and useful. Eurostat performs data validation by verifying whether data are in accordance with certain basic criteria that serve to assess the plausibility of the given data. In this context, the following specific definition is applicable: Data validation is an activity verifying whether or not a combination of values is a member of a set of acceptable combinations (see Definitions).
Data validation is a key task performed in all statistical domains. In order to increase overall data quality and workflow efficiency, the European Statistical System (ESS) is moving towards more harmonised validation activities. In cooperation with ESS partners, Eurostat supports the effort towards more integration by defining common standards for validation, providing common validation tools or services to be used by the ESS , and providing statistical, administrative and technical support in the implementation of the common standards and in the use of the common tools.
This information portal on data validation contains the following main sections:
- Validation concepts - including the description of typical validation processes and their technical details
- Validation in the ESS - including the principles that aim to ensure high quality in the ESS , the ideal process of validation in the ESS , possible task distribution scenarios for the Member States, and a brief summary of relevant standards (SDMX , VTL , CSPA )
- Validation services at Eurostat - including the overview of current (EDAMIS, EDIT , SDMX -related), upcoming (STRUVAL , CONVAL ), and future (Validation Rule Manager) IT tools that are or will be made available by Eurostat to the Member States
