2.1. Data description

The vineyard data set includes data on the structure of vineyards in the European Union. It covers the holding which are on the market growing vines intended to produce grapes for other purposes than table grapes or growing plants for vegetative propagation of before mentioned vines and the area covered by these vines. The data concerns the vine types, degree of specialisation of vine-grower holdings, main varieties of grapes and age of plants. Some indicators are collected at national level, others a NUTS2 level. The data are extracted from the vineyard register. The Member States, which have more than 500 ha of vines for other purpose than table grape production need to collect the data.

The reference year of the data described in this report is the year 2020.

2.2. Classification system

The classification system used in the vineyard data has several dimensions:  type of vineyards, degree of specialisation of the holding, main varieties (> 500 ha t national level), age of plants and size classes of holdings. More information can be found in the Handbook.

2.3. Coverage - sector

Growing of grapes for other purposes than table grapes (mainly for wine, juice, raisins) (part of NACE rev.  2 classification of A01.21: growing of grapes) and plant propagation for vines (part of NACE rev.  2 classification of A01.30: plant propagation).

2.4. Statistical concepts and definitions

Statistical characteristics of observations

Agricultural area planted with vines which area is minimum 0,1 ha OR produce for purpose selling wine. Characteristics: area size, calendar year and season of plantation, variety of vine, user (holding), state of production (for wine, for vegetative propagation, not yet in productive state etc., ), geographical condition (area of wine region or not).

Is there a national legislation covering structural vineyard statistics? YES

Additional comments

3.5. Data compilation

Classifications, re-classifications to get EU classificatons, aggregations for holdings, species and sum of totals.

The methods for compiling missing characteristics:

- Vine type concerning wine quality: The cadaster does not contain concerning the parcels the information of PDO/PGI/NP classification. To compile it there were used the informations on geographical conditions (areas on wine regions or out of wine regions), age, variety of grapes and density (number of plants) of the plantation. Every wine region has its own particular product descriptions containing the rules for these charasteristics to regulate the production of different quality wine.

- In production/Not yet in production. It is compiled by using the information of plantation year date

- Specialization of the holdings. It is compiled by using the vine type information.

The compilation of this characteristics based on the data of the cadaster.

3.6. Adjustment

It was necessary to complete the region code informations. The cadaster contains the settlement data as geographical information.

6. Accuracy and reliability Top
6.1. Accuracy - overall

How good is the accuracy of the vineyard statistics? Good
What are the main factors lowering the accuracy? Coverage errors
If others, which ones?

Additional comments

About the coverage error, which is lowering the accuracy: By theory the vineyard register covers the whole area and all holdings producing grape and wine for market. It may happen out of the vine regions there are some farmers who can not, or do not give the information for the wine community properly. This may cause a minimal coverage error, which has no importance concerning statistical results.

6.2. Sampling error

There was not sampling.

6.2.1. Sampling error - indicators

There was not sampling.

6.3. Non-sampling error

Non sampling errors may occur in the next cases:

- Dismissed, not exact registration in the register;

- The land user does not give exact informations.

6.3.1. Coverage error

In the context of vineyard data collection the non-sampling errors are linked to the quality of the vineyard register

Under coverage

Does the vineyard register include all wine growers of the country? NO
If not, which kinds of wine growers are not included?

Growers do not selling wine and have vineyard area less then 0,1 ha. But they are not on the market.

There are some farmers who have their area out of the vine regions. They product wine not for the market, only for private custom.

How many percent of the total number of wine growers are not included?

Less than 0,5 % of growers.

How big part of the vineyard area is not included?

Less than 0,5 % of vineyard area.

Impact of under coverage on the data quality Low

Over coverage

Does the vineyard register include holdings which are not any more active wine growers? YES
If yes, how many years does an inactive holding stay in the register?

1 year

Are former wine grower holdings, which haven't harvested regularly the grapes for more than 5 years, part of the vineyard data collection? NO
Impact of over coverage on the data quality None

Multiple listing errors

Number of farms listed in the register several times? None
Impact of multiple listings on the data quality None

Misclassification

Does the misclassification of units or characteristics have an impact on the data quality? YES
If yes, to which extent? Minor
Which characteristics are affected?
Area
Number of holdings
Type of production
Size class
Degree of specialisation
Main varieties
Age class

Impact of misclassification on the data quality  Low

Degree of bias caused by coverage errors None
What measures were taken to mitigate the impact of coverage errors?
None
Ancillary data sources were used in parallel to the vineyard register
Statistical correction methods
Others

In case coverage errors were detected, was the authority responsible for the vineyard register notified? NO
Have actions been taken to improve the register? YES
