2.1. Data description

The vineyard data set includes data on the structure of vineyards in the European Union. It covers the holdings growing vines intended to produce grapes for other purposes than table grapes or growing plants for vegetative propagation of before mentioned vines and the area covered by these vines.  The data concerns the vine types, degree of specialisation of vine-grower holdings, main varieties of grapes and age of plants. Some indicators are collected at national level, others a NUTS2 level. The data are extracted from the vineyard register. The Member States, which have more than 500 ha of vines for other purpose than table grape production need to collect the data.

The reference year of the data described in this report is the year 2020.

2.2. Classification system

The classification system used in the vineyard data has several dimensions:  type of vineyards, degree of specialisation of the holding, main varieties (> 500 ha t national level), age of plants and size classes of holdings. More information can be found in the Handbook.

2.3. Coverage - sector

Growing of grapes for other purposes than table grapes (mainly for wine, juice, raisins) (part of NACE rev.  2 classification of A01.21: growing of grapes) and plant propagation for vines (part of NACE rev.  2 classification of A01.30: plant propagation).

We used available data from the vineyard register. For the purposes of the Vineyard structure survey the information from the Register was summarized, processed and structured, as required by the Regulation (EU) № 887/2014 to fill in the tables. The filled in data concerning area under vines, broken down by designation: for production of wines with a protected designation of origin (PDO), wines with protected geographical indication (PGI) and other wines by variety, year of planting and area.

4. Quality management Top

The contents of the vineyard register have been examined and found to meet the requirements of Regulation (EU) № 1337/2011 with few exceptions.

The register does not contain information on the young vines not yet in production, but it does contain the planting year.

The vineyard register does not contain information on holdings with area under vines for the production of raisins. Тhe area under vineyards for raisins in Bulgaria is small. This characteristic is not important for the country.

4.1. Quality assurance

Is there a quality management process in place for vineyard statistics? YES
If yes, what are the components?

The data obtained from EAVW was discussed, examined (comparison of categories and sub-categories, time frames, periods and scope covered incl.) And validated at expert level. The EAVW experts were informed timely in order to remove some inconsistencies and technical errors for data update.

Additional comments

4.2. Quality management - assessment

   Grading  Comments
How would you describe the overall quality of the structural vineyard statistics?  Good

The vine and wine register maintains information, which complies with the requirements of the European statistical indicators of vineyards in accordance with Regulation (EC) № 1337/2011 of the European Parliament and the Council. In the vineyard register there is no reference whether vineyards are maintained on an annual basis or not. The vineyards are removed from the Register after the owner submits a declaration/application for change of use. The tables contain data on abandoned area.

How would you describe the relevance of the structural vineyard statistics?  Good

The register does not contain information on holdings with areas under vines for the production of raisins.

How would you describe the accuracy of the structural vineyard statistics?  Satisfactory

The vineyard register contains area under abandoned vineyards that are not maintained.

Young vines not yet in production are determined by the year of planting.

How would you describe the comparability of the structural vineyard statistics with other agricultural statistics, e.g. FSS and Annual Crop Statistics?  Good

The definition for vineyard holding in the vineyard register coincides with the statistical definition for vineyard holding. The register includes all holdings producing wine grape varieties, regardless the destination – for sale or own consumption.

The threshold for registration in the vineyard register is similar to the threshold set in IFS - 0.1 ha.

The data from the vineyard register is processed in accordance with the requirements of the Manual on the vineyard structure. The location of large farms with activity in more than one region is determined by the largest area. And for structural vineyard statistics in Tables 1 and 4 are reported in the corresponding NUTS2.

The Annual Crop Statistics data, Table 4 are by location of the vineyards, and in Table 3 only the harvested area is reported.

How would you describe the coherence (over time) of the structural vineyard statistics?  Good

The data 2009 was collected via statistical census, from 2015 till now the data is from administrative register.

How would you describe the coherence (across regions in your country) of the structural vineyard statistics?  Very good

How would you describe the accessibility of the structural vineyard statistics?  Very good
How would you describe the clarity of the structural vineyard statistics?  Very good
