3.1. Data description | ||||||||
Capacity (Annex I, Section 1): Number of accommodation establishments rooms and bed places on LAU 2 level. Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2): Number of arrivals and overnights stays by resident and non-resident visitors in Austrian municipalities on LAU 2 level. The data are available on a monthly basis. |
||||||||
3.2. Classification system
Establishment’s classifications and categories - NACE 55.1: Hotels and similar establishments according to the national classification one to five star. Establishment’s classifications and categories - NACE 55.2: Holiday villages; Youth hostels; All health establishments; Mountain huts and shelters; other paid accommodation establishments Establishment’s classifications and categories - NACE 55.3: Camping/caravanning sites
Differences might occur when the observed objects do not have their main classification in NACE 55, as the used compilation system is not based on a business register Additionally, 4 categories of private accommodation are included. Private accommodation is defined as paid accommodation establishment under 10 bed places. The regional classifications used are NUTS classification: NUTS 2, NUTS 3 and LAU 2. |

7.1. Confidentiality - policy
Capacity (Annex I, Section 1): Bundesstatistikgesetz 2000. §17 guarantees to keep personal data confidential. However information on beds and rooms (capacity) is not regarded as confidential data. Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2): Bundesstatistikgesetz 2000. §17 guarantees to keep personal data confidential. Care for data confidentiality is written in National Statistics Act - data collected with statistical reports can be used for statistical purposes only and shown as aggregates, so that it is not possible to identify individual reporting units. |
|||
7.2. Confidentiality - data treatment
Capacity (Annex I, Section 1): No confidentiality rules are applied as the capacity data are common knowledge. Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2): Data are not published when less than three statistical units are subject to observation. |

10.1. Dissemination format - News release
Capacity (Annex I, Section 1): Data on number of bed-places and establishments, bedrooms in hotels and similar accommodation establishments, and occupancy rates are published via press release once a year: Establishments beds. Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2): Data on number of arrivals and overnights, by main countries of origin, accommodation establishments and Laender are published on a monthly basis via press release: Arrivals overnight stays. |

10.3. Dissemination format - online database
Database with free access is available under this website. |
|||
10.4. Dissemination format - microdata access
No microdata are available. Reason is that due to the survey method no information is available on micro level. Since municipalities collect data and preaggregate it on community level, microdata are kept within each municipality. |
|||
10.5. Dissemination format - other
Capacity (Annex I, Section 1): Data are collected and published at the geographical level LAU2. Additionally, information on paid private accommodation establishments (less than 10 beds) is collected. Capacity data are also available for summer (May-October) and winter season (November-April). Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2): Data are collected and published at the geographical level LAU2. Additionally, information on paid private accommodation establishments (less than 10 beds) is collected. A more detailed geographical breakdown by country of provenance is also published at national level (e.g.: by Austrian and German regions). All variables are published on a monthly basis. |

13.1. Accuracy - overall
Capacity (Annex I, Section 1): Due to the cut-off sample design, nearly full coverage is assured. The sampling error is negligible. Non response is widely excluded, as by legislative obligations accommodation establishments have to report to municipalities. Some problems might occur, if establishments do not report the correct number of bedplaces. Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2): Due to the cut-off sample design, nearly full coverage is assured. The sampling error is negligible. Non response is widely excluded, as by legislative obligations accommodation establishments have to report to municipalities. Non response is widely excluded, as by legislative obligations accommodation establishments have to report to municipalities. Some problems might occur, if establishments do not report the correct number of overnights. Undercoverage could be a problem if babies are not reported. It is also possible that a slight overcoverage occurs if seasonal workers are considered to be tourists. |

15.3. Coherence - cross domain
Capacity (Annex I, Section 1): The business register observes the number of accommodation establishments in NACE categories 55.1, 55.2 and 55.3. Due to methodological differences, slight deviances are observed. A comparison with data from the business register is not useful as the methods diverge. The business register collects data from establishments with more than 20 employees, which is not a criterion for the capacity survey. Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2): Data are reconciled with the outcome of the sample survey for demand side tourism. This reconciliation is limited due to the different compilation methodology (cut-off-sample vs sample survey), target population (residents older than 15 years) and variables. Nevertheless, the number of overnights of residents in Austria can be compared by regarding the mentioned methodological deviances. Also mirror data are observed though the quality of this partner country data are regarded to be of less quality as the corresponding outbound flows of these countries are based on sample surveys. |
||||||
15.4. Coherence - internal
Coherence between annual and monthly data Capacity (Annex I, Section 1): Annual data are not the sum of seasonal data but asked separately in the questionnaire. The reason is to avoid double counting as one establishment could be counted either in the summer season or in the winter season or in both. In case the establishment is counted in both seasons it only counts for one establishment for the annual data. Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2): Annual data are the sum of monthly data. |

18.5. Data compilation
Capacity (Annex I, Section 1) The collected data includes all rented accommodation establishments (except for those accommodation establishments located in communes with less than 1000 overnights a year), i.e. no threshold concerning the number of beds per establishment is applied. Therefore no imputation, weighting or grossing-up procedures are applied. In cases where the difference to the preceding year is conspicuous or the occupancy ratio over 100%, the municipality is contacted to verify the correctness of the data.
Occupancy (Annex I, Section 2) When deviances with previous periods and/or capacity data occur, the reporting commune is asked for the reason. In very exceptional cases we also seek contact with the concerning accommodation establishment, to assure the right data value. By this procedure no imputation is needed as unit and/or item non response is not accepted. For the first published data (t+25days), 80% of the reporting communes are considered. The following compilation procedure is used: Results of the most important 80% communes are set in relation to the corresponding communes' results of the previous year. The change rate is the basis for calculating first results of the period, broken down in major variables. For the final data no grossing up method is used. |
