3. Relevance Top

The indicator is part of the EU Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator set. It is used to monitor progress towards SDG 5 on gender equality.

In order to promote women’s social and economic empowerment, SDG 5 calls for, among other things, recognition and value of unpaid care and domestic work, equal rights and access to economic and natural resources, technology, basic and financial services and property.

Indicator is also included as main indicator in the Social Scoreboard for the European Pillar of Social Rights.

Increasing female labour market participation and the equal economic independence of women and men is one of the priorities of the Strategic Engagement for Gender Equality. This strategy sets the framework for the EU's future work towards gender equality. The other priorities are reducing the gender pay, earnings and pension gaps and thus fighting poverty among women, promoting equality between women and men in decision-making, combating gender-based violence and protecting and supporting victims, and promoting gender equality and women’s rights across the world.


4. Statistical Indicator Top
4.1. Data description

The indicator measures the difference between the employment rates of men and women aged 20 to 64. The employment rate is calculated by dividing the number of persons aged 20 to 64 in employment by the total population of the same age group. The indicator is based on the EU Labour Force Survey.

Calendar year.

The indicator is produced according to the high-level quality standards of European Statistics. Details on accuracy can be found in the metadata of the source datasets (see link to related metadata).

Data source: ESS Labour Force Survey (LFS)

Data provider: Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, based on data reported by the countries.

All EU MS

Data are presented for all EU Member States plus the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey. Since 2014, data for France include also the French overseas departments (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane, La Réunion), with the exception of Mayotte.

Data are comparable between all EU Member States respectively other presented countries.

Presented times series (including EU aggregates) starts in 2005.
