The indicator is part of the EU Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator set. It is used to monitor progress towards SDG 5 on gender equality. In order to promote women’s social and economic empowerment, SDG 5 calls for, among other things, recognition and value of unpaid care and domestic work, equal rights and access to economic and natural resources, technology, basic and financial services and property. Indicator is also included as main indicator in the Social Scoreboard for the European Pillar of Social Rights. Increasing female labour market participation and the equal economic independence of women and men is one of the priorities of the Strategic Engagement for Gender Equality. This strategy sets the framework for the EU's future work towards gender equality. The other priorities are reducing the gender pay, earnings and pension gaps and thus fighting poverty among women, promoting equality between women and men in decision-making, combating gender-based violence and protecting and supporting victims, and promoting gender equality and women’s rights across the world. |
