3.4. Statistical concepts and definitions

Central government bond yields' definitions vary according to country. This series may be used instead of the Maastricht series if a longer time series is needed.

In principle, all yields are calculated for bonds on the secondary market.

Country specific notes

Belgium: Secondary market gross yield on fixed-interest public bonds of 6 years and over.

Denmark: The rate given is a weighted average of the rates of yield on 10-year central government bonds.

Germany: Average of secondary market gross yield on fixed-interest public bonds for all maturities over 1 year.

Greece: Yield on public sector bonds. Data are not available after 1988.

Spain: Bond yield on the secondary market for government bonds of more than two years.

France: Yield on fixed interest bonds on the secondary market (excluding lottery bonds) of more than 7 years' maturity issued by the public and semi-public sectors.

Ireland: Yield on fixed interest redeemable bond of 15 years to maturity.

Italy: Yield on central government bonds (gross) of between 9 and 10 years maturity.

Luxembourg: Average weighted yield on government bonds. In January 1993 the yield calculation method was changed, with the aim of eliminating the non-liquid or rarely traded bonds from the monthly yield figure.

Netherlands: Weighted average true yields to maturity of central government bonds. Yields are gross, without deduction of tax.

Austria: Secondary market yield on Federal government bonds.

Portugal: Average yield on long-term bonds.

Finland: Secondary market yield on 9-year central government bonds.

Sweden: Monthly average effective annualised yield on 9-year central government bonds.

United Kingdom: Yield on fixed-interest redeemable government bonds with 20 years to maturity.
