2.1. Data description | |||
The livestock and meat statistics are collected under Regulation (EC) No 1165/2008 since 2009. They cover slaughtering in slaughterhouses (monthly) and other slaughtering (annual), GIP (gross indigenous production) forecast (semi-annual or quarterly data), and livestock statistics (once or twice a year), including regional statistics (annual).This template lists the questions constituting the quality report required in Article 17 of EU Regulation N°1165/2008 on livestock and meat statistics. This quality report covers the year 2019 and all the quality indicators already reported for year 2010 on the statistical processes used to meet the Regulation (EC) No 1165/2008. |

3.1.2. Data Sources for the defined process
Data sources used to meet Regulation (EC) No 1165/2008 for the defined process in 3.1.1.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3.2. Frequency of data collection
Data is collected once per Year. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3.3. Data collection | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The data is collected by postal survey. Reminders are sent by post after an appropriate amount of time has passed with no response. A stand-alone register which holds all identified farms in the State is used to inform which farms recieve a form. This register is updated from registers held by the DAFM. A sample of these farms that have sheep is selcted to recieve a survey form. The results are based on a matched sample methodology. We examine trends between the referenece year and the preceding year, obtained by comparing the returns for the same matched sample of farms. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3.4. Data validation | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cross referencing of surveys results against DAFM’s Sheep & Goat and Pig Censuses. Consistent Macro edits within DMS are performed which compare totals over a number of years. Consultation with experts within industry to ascertain reasons behind emerging trends. |

The data collected is to meet the needs of both the EU and national users. Our main national users are sheep farmers, citizens involved or interested in the sheep farming business, Teagasc and Bord Bia. |
|||
5.2. Relevance - User Satisfaction
We have never conducted a formal survey of user satisfaction, we are in regular contact with our main users. Based on feedback received from users, they are satisfied with both the quality and quantity of the bovine statistics provided by the CSO. |

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6.1. Accuracy - overall
The folllowing were identified as the main sources of error for this survey; Coverage error, Measurement error and non-response error. When selecting farms to recieve a survey, farms are selected from those who are on record to hold sheep. Some random error could be associated from selecting respondents in this way. Measurement error and non-response error can result in some systematic error. Efforts are made to minimise the contribution of these error sources. |

Efforts are made to reduce the cost and burden of data collection on respondents. We aim to minimise the cost and burden by using all available administrative data sources and keeping data requests to a minimum. Two surveys are issued per year. The cost of this yearly survey includes the cost of printing materials, postage, return postage and labor of CSO employees who work on this survey. No superfluous data is requested from the farmers. |
