3.1. Data description

Statistics on eggs for hatching and farmyard poultry chicks are collected under (market) Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. They are the earliest available information to foresee production of poultry meat and eggs, as the numbers of chicks of various utilities placed in the farms of each Member State, i.e. the number of chicks placed by the hatcheries of this Member State increased by the net import of chicks.

Until 2015 in Lithuania, monthly data on trade in chicks were drawn from the report of enterprises hatching eggs. The structure of hatcheries covers only hatcheries which have more than 1000 hatching places. In our case, only 3 enterprises hatching eggs send monthly reports by species, category and type of poultry. Enterprises show the number of chicks imported and exported during the same month, according to species, category and type of poultry. Since 2015, Lithuania sent data on trade in chicks under Regulation (EC) No 617/2008 from international trade statistics (i.e. Intrastat and Extrastat).

Intrastat treshold: Exemption threshold - 250 000 EUR (Declaration form UPS-02 shall be filled in).

The quality of statistical information and its production process is ensured by the provisions of the European Statistics Code of Practice and ESS Quality Assurance Framework.

In 2007, a quality management system, conforming to the requirements of the international quality management system standard ISO 9001, was introduced at Statistics Lithuania. The main trends in activity of Statistics Lithuania aimed at quality management and continuous development in the institution are established in the Quality Policy.

Monitoring of the quality indicators of statistical processes and their results and self-evaluation of statistical survey managers is regularly carried out in order to identify the areas which need improvement and to promptly eliminate the shortcomings.
