3.1. Data description

Statistics on hatching eggs and chicks are collected under Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. They are the first information available for forecasting poultry meat and egg production, as they consist of the number of chicks placed on holdings in each Member State, i.e. the number of chicks placed by hatcheries in that Member State as well as the number of imported chicks.


In France, the questionnaire on trade in chicks between Member States is completed each month using data supplied by French Customs. These monthly data are available around the 7th of month M+2. The statistical service of the Ministry of Agriculture checks these data before using them for its own purposes. As regards hatchery activity, the Statistical Service of the Ministry of Agriculture conducts a monthly online survey of 6 breeders (breeders) and 70 hatcheries (hatcheries). Hatcheries report the number of eggs hatched and the number of chicks hatched for several species: hen, duck, goose, turkey and guinea fowl. Breeders report only for Gallus (hens). Data is collected from the 1st to the 15th of the following month. The response rate is approximately 80% for 2020. Non-respondents are estimated.

The monthly survey on the activities of hatcheries and breeders is a compulsory survey, recognised as being of general interest and of statistical quality by the National Council for Statistical Information, and has been approved by the Minister of the Economy (article 2 of the law of 7 June 1951).

There is no automated treatment of partial non-response on these surveys. Checks are made to ensure that establishments report data on the same species from one year to the next. In the event that a difference is observed (new species or absent species), the survey manager contacts the establishments concerned by telephone in order to check that this is not an error.

 Treatment of total non-response

The estimation method used for total non-response consists of applying to the K-12 data of the non-respondent establishment the change observed in the respondent establishments for the same variable and the same species. If the K-12 data does not exist, the K-1 data is used as a reference. The manager may correct the automatic estimate calculated and replace it with a manual estimate.
