3.1. Data description

Statistics on eggs for hatching and farmyard poultry chicks are collected under (market) Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. They are the earliest available information to foresee production of poultry meat and eggs, as the numbers of chicks of various utilities placed in the farms of each Member State, i.e. the number of chicks placed by the hatcheries of this Member State increased by the net import of chicks.

In Finland, there is no direct use of these statistics and they are compiled only for the European Commission needs. The selection farms are integrated together with the hatcheries and their managers notify the Food Agency by email once a month regarding hatchery activity, export of chicks and import of selection chicks. The number of imported utility chicks is not significant.
