Statistics on eggs for hatching and farmyard poultry chicks are collected under (market) Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. They are the earliest available information to foresee production of poultry meat and eggs, as the numbers of chicks of various utilities placed in the farms of each Member State, i.e. the number of chicks placed by the hatcheries of this Member State increased by the net import of chicks.

The survey of poultry in Bulgaria was introduced in 2004 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and covers the following species: chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, quail, ostrich and guinea fowl as well as the production of their products - eggs and poultry for slaughter.
The intention of the survey is to provide information on the poultry number, the species and categories on December 31, the production of eggs and poultry for slaughter in the observed calendar year. The survey is based on a representative sample of poultry farms, which grow one or more poultry species.
Definition and sources of information
The statistical survey covers units defined as farms under the Law on Agricultural Census in Bulgaria in 2010 and grow one or more types of poultry. The survey is implemented locally by experts on agricultural statistics in Regional Directorate "Agriculture". They conduct interviews with farmers and complete statistical questionnaires on poultry for each farm.
Main statistical indicators
1. Stocking: Laying hens (utility and parents), chickens for meat, turkeys, ducks, geese, quail, ostrich and guinea fowl on December 31.
2. Produced eggs by species and type of use – for consumption, for breeding (laying hens, meat and dual-purpose) during the previous calendar year.
3. Number of realized poultry (hens, pullets and birds fattened) - submitted to the slaughterhouses, slaughtered on the farm, live poultry sold in the previous calendar year.
Scope, model and sample size
The sample of farms with poultry is stratified and provides the necessary coverage in the studied species.
The sample was compiled from a list of poultry farms surveyed during the agricultural census in 2010. Farms were divided into six groups according to specialization (type of poultry):
- Specialized farms with laying hens;
- Specialized farms with chickens for meat (broilers);
- Specialized farms with other birds;
- No specialized farms (growing more than one kind of poultry);
- Small poultry farms, growing to 10 birds;
- Large holdings surveyed exhaustively;
- New farm (created after 2010).
Each group was divided into subgroups - 13 subgroups (strata) based on the number of poultry in them x 28 districts (NUTS3) = 364 strata total.
In a survey in 2017, the sample include 3027 farms, covering 2.7% of all farms with birds (109.6 thousand poultry farms total) and 93% of all birds. The data are representative on the NUTS2 level 6 statistical regions.
Hatcheries statistics
Activity of hatcheries - eggs for hatching placed in incubation and realized chicks.
Bulgaria collects monthly data from all hatcheries (exhaustively) in the country. The collected data concerns the number of eggs placed for hatching by type – chicks, turkeys, geese, ducks, etc., and by destination - laying hens, meat type chicken, regarding the number of realized chicks from hatcheries (whether placed for growing in farms, which belongs to the hatchery, or sold for breeding to other farms within the country, or exported for breeding outside the country).

Eurostat uses the data for foreign trade of chicks for Bulgaria directly from the Comext database. Comext is filled and loaded by the responsible institution for foreign trade statistics in Bulgaria - NSI.

Monthly exhaustive survey 

All hatcheries that placed more than 1000 eggs per year are interviewed.

 Customs declarations from all customs offices are entered in the Bulgarian Integrated Customs Information System. Monthly, based on a bilateral agreement with Customs Agency, NSI receives primary data necessary for the compilation of foreign trade statistics.

Intrastat declarations are entered in the information system "Intrastat" of NRA. Monthly, according to the Instruction for information exchange between NSI and the NRA developed in implementation of the Law on Statistics of Intra-Community Trade in goods, NSI receives primary file with records of all Intrastat declarations

Hatcheries that placed 1000 eggs per year

Imports/arrivals include all goods entering the statistical territory of the Republic of Bulgaria from other countries and are for consumption in the country, for processing in the country with the purpose to be exported/dispatched to another country after processing, and also imports/arrivals of goods after processing outside the country.

Exports/dispatches include all goods leaving the statistical territory of the Republic of Bulgaria and are for normal export to another country. It covers also goods returned to the trade partner after processing in Bulgaria or exported/dispatched goods sent for processing in another country in order to be returned back to the Republic of Bulgaria.

Statistical survey - Poultry breeding in Bulgaria

The list of hatcheries has been compiled on the basis of a statistical survey of poultry in Bulgaria and is periodically updated with information from the register of the hatcheries maintained by the Bulgarian food safety agency (BFSA)

Any natural and legal person lodging a customs declaration is reporting to the extra-EU trade statistics on the condition that the customs procedure is of statistical relevance.
Within intra-EU trade statistics any taxable person carrying out an intra-EU trade transaction is responsible for providing the information. However small and medium trade operators are exempted from obligation to provide Intrastat declarations. Each year thresholds are defined which allows intra-EU traders not to report on their transaction or provide less detailed information on condition that their total trade value does not exceed a certain amount during the previous or current calendar year. However, quality standards are assured when determining the thresholds.

The list of statistical units is based on a statistical survey - Poultry breeding in Bulgaria, conducted every year by the Agrostatistics department. This survey covers all the hatcheries with activity during the year. The ones placing up to/over 1000 eggs are observed monthly.

We also use the Register of the Bulgarian food safety agency to update the list of statistical units.

Calendar month

Theoretically, the reference period for the information on international trade in goods transactions should be the calendar month of export or import of the goods. The main sources of information is the statistical questionnaire which is applicabled in the information system for agrostatistics (ISAS) for data entry. The respondents could fill in the information online by themselves or they could be interviewed by a regional expert.
