3.1. Data description

Statistics on eggs for hatching and farmyard poultry chicks are collected under (market) Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. They are the earliest available information to foresee production of poultry meat and eggs, as the numbers of chicks of various utilities placed in the farms of each Member State, i.e. the number of chicks placed by the hatcheries of this Member State increased by the net import of chicks.

In Austria, hatcheries with a hatching capacity of 1.000 hatching eggs are required to send each month data to Statistics Austria concerning the weekly number of eggs placed and chicks hatched. Once a year they have to fill out an additional form regarding the structure of the hatchery (mandatory according to the national regulation BGBL. II Nr. 356/2003).

Data on trade of chicks originate from the International Trade in Goods Statistics Department (ITGS). The goods are classified according to the EU-wide Combined Nomenclature (CN). Preliminary data are available day+70, final data in June of the following year.

INTRASTAT: Statistics based on primary data. Reporting units are economic operators in intra- EU-trade with a trade value per trade direction which surpasses the assimilation threshold of €750.000 in 2020. EXTRASTAT: Statistics based on secondary data. Statistics Austria receives the data (customs declarations of economic operators) from Austrian customs authorities.

Statistics Austria does not collect any other monthly or annually data on poultry production (e.g. eggs for consumption), just data directed under Regulation (EC) 617/2008 and 1165/2008.
