3.1. Data description

Organic farming is defined as a method of production where the greatest emphasis is placed on environmental protection, and the production avoids or greatly reduces the use of synthetic chemical inputs, such as fertilizers, pesticides, additives and medical products. Organic production includes livestock production, and the production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their use in animal feed is also prohibited. Organic farming differs from other methods of agricultural production in the application of regulated standards (production rules), mandatory control schemes and a specific marking scheme.
Organic statistics collect data on:
- Number of organic operators such as producers (agricultural holdings, aquaculture production units), processors, importers, exporters and other operators (wholesalers, retailers, etc.)
- Organic crop area under conversion and fully converted
- Organic crop production from fully converted area
- Number of organic livestock
- Volume of organic products of animal origin
- Volume of organic aquaculture production
- Number of operators processing products issued from organic farming (based on NACE classification)......and etc.

From 2020 onwards as well the data on organic production have also been enriched with data on yields.
