Electricity Supply This data is administrative data and so we do not have access to the full breakdown
  • Net to gross factors are recalculated annually based on the monthly Electricity Generation survey. Previous a default of 0.95 was used for all fuels
  • Verified Emissions Trading Data on fuel inputs for electricity generation is used to verify the electricity outputs provided in this survey.
Solid Fuel The estimation techniques for the smaller solid fuels providers requires an update. Data is supplemented with verified data from the Emissions Trading Scheme on an annual basis. This allow us to verify the sum of the monthly data collection for certain data points. This has resulted in an improvement of the data accuracy in the relevant sectors on an annual basis.

Estimation Techniques:

In the case of non-responses we will estimate the data using an average of the last 12 months data until the respondent has replied.

To cover the smaller units that aren’t included in the survey due to the cut-off threshold, a “Ghost return” has been developed which estimates the total data for the smaller units in one survey return. The technique used was developed in 2009 when this survey was set up. The estimation method used data from the CSO Trade statistics to identify overall solid fuel totals which in turn highlighted areas we were missing. Prior to this it was estimated by experts in the business.

Monthly Gas

Ireland has only two natural gas fields. Due to commercial sensitivity the larger gas field will only provide data on a quarterly basis and not monthly.

Monthly production for this field is estimated based on the previous year’s supply for that month until the quarterly data is available. Once the quarterly data is available, monthly production is estimated as quarterly divided by 3 and the previous months are resubmitted. This production is added to production from Ireland’s only other natural gas field which is almost depleted. This works as follows:

May 2016: Submit April 2016 estimating production using April 2015 supply
June 2016: Submit May 2016 estimating production using May 2015 supply
July: Submit June 2016 estimating production using actual quarterly production figures. Revise and resubmit April & May using this method.
August 2016: Submit July 2016 estimating production using July 2015 supply
etc.

Unfortunately this means that the production and supply values are estimated each month, however the sum of the three months and annual data will be accurate once the quarterly data is available.
