6.1. Institutional Mandate - legal acts and other agreements
The National Statistics Office (NSO) is the executive arm of the Malta Statistics Authority. It is responsible for the collection, compilation, analysis, and publication of a wide range of statistical information and related matters.
The Immigration Police within the Malta Police Force are responsible for the enforcement of legislation related to illegal entry and returns of persons within the national territory. All data related to these processes are recorded and retained by the Immigration Police.
Based on an agreement with the NSO, the Immigration Police compile all data tables related to EIL statistics in line with the requirements stipulated by the respective regulations.

Malta has only one airport and one seaport and data from all border control police arrive centrally at Police General Head Quarters on a regular basis. This data is distributed internally to staff working in border control and immigration within the police force. It is kept updated by personnel specifically assigned for this duty.
