11.1. Quality assurance

The methods and procedures used for ensuring data quality are:

- For the registered events (births and deaths), checks are made regarding duplication of records, inconsistent records as well as for excluding records that do not comply with the definition of the usually resident population.
- Migration estimates are corsschecked with surveys and administrative sources available by CYSTAT.
The quality of statistics in CYSTAT is managed in the framework of the European Statistics Code of Practice which sets the standards for developing, producing and disseminating European Statistics as well as the ESS
Quality Assurance Framework (QAF). CYSTAT endorses the Quality Declaration of the European Statistical System. In addition, CYSTAT is guided by the requirements provided for in Article 11 of the Statistics Law No.
25(I) of 2021 as well as Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 on European statistics, which sets out the quality criteria to be applied in the development, production and dissemination of European statistics.

18.3. Data collection

Data on births and deaths: As of 2015 (ref.year), the data base of deaths kept by the Health Monitoring Unit in Cyprus is used as the primary source for deaths statistics. In addition to that, the registered births and deaths
are also obtained from the Civil Registry and Migration Department, in electronic form. Data are processed, edited and validated.


Migration data: For migration statistics, estimates are made based on various sources, such as the Passenger survey, which is conducted at the two international airports of Cyprus, as well as on other household surveys and
administrative sources available by CYSTAT.

The data are checked in order to see whether they are clean, accurate and of the required format. Checks for duplicates (for registered events only), incorrect formats and range checks are perfomed electronically with the use
of SPSS Software and BLAISE.
